What is Nomex and for what purpose it’s used

Nomex is name of a material which has great efficiency being resistant to flame and for the same reasons it’s been used in the manufacturing of different things. Nomex comes in many forms but the most common shapes of Nomex are sheets and fiber. Nomex sheets are frequently used for covering places where protection against flames or heat is required. This feature of the Nomex sheets has made it important for the fire fighting industry and they keep stressing the Nomex manufacturers to produce sheets that can resist too much high temperatures.

Nomex is very much durable because it’s long lasting and strong. Apart from being resistant to flames, Nomex is highly resistant chemically and thermally. Nomex has wide usage in the electronic circuit boards and in similar products because of its great features. Nomex has such great features that it is widely used in the manufacturing of air planes also. The air suits manufactured today which are worn by the pilots also have great ratio of Nomex in it. That protects the crew of an aircraft against any incidents of fire in the cockpit or at any other place inside the aircraft.

Nomex also has great application in the racing industry because when racing cars get burnt Nomex protects the life of driver driving the car. At some venues it’s a trend that racing car drivers wear costumes which are made from Nomex. They wear Nomex gloves, Nomex socks, Nomex under wears and similarly Nomex is everywhere to protect them from fire. Similarly there are different kinds of requirements of Nomex made costumes at different venues around the world. At some venues there is restriction of wearing Nomex costumes up to certain thickness level and at some venues less thickness is required.

A Nomex made costume has the ability to protect a person inside the costume from 30 seconds to one minute in case of fire. For the same reasons there are many kinds of products available in the markets which are made from Nomex. One of the important products which are quite commonly used by the firefighters and the racing drivers is Nomex hood. Nomex hoods are designed for protecting the human face from getting any kind of harm while exposed in the fire. Nomex hood is placed above the mask which the fire fighters usually wear which resists the high intensity of heat from getting inside the mask. Similarly the racing drivers have Nomex hoods above the helmet which protects the helmet and face inside the helmet.

Nomex doesn’t have a big history as it has proved its importance in the recent decades and its not there for long ago. However Nomex has proved itself very much useful in recent decades and it has reduced causalities especially in the racing cars industry. There are many benefits of Nomex which are yet to be explored and many institutes are researching the same for possible benefits and applications of Nomex in more products in future.
