Some of the famous ones amongst them include 2000 Summer Olympics, 2003 Rugby World Cup, 1938 British Empire Games, Cricket World Cup Matches, Musical Concerts, Art Exhibitions and similar other events. Chapter 2: History of the City

As far as human settlements are concerned Sydney is one of the oldest cities of the world. There are proofs that humans were settled in the area even thirty thousand years ago. However no one knows the exact history of the city before the arrival of the British. An estimate shows that there were few thousand people living in the city when the British first arrived in Sydney in the 18^th century.

The first British man that reached Australia was Captain James Cook in 1770. He interacted firstly with a community of aboriginals in the Botany Bay area. Later in 1788 the British government formed a settlement of convicts in the area of Botany Bay. A fleet comprising of eleven ships arrived in the area under Arthur Phillip in 1788 for making such settlement. However that area was not suitable for human dwelling and for the same reasons a colony was made in the area of Sydney Cove the same year.

Name of the City

The city was named after Lord Thomas Townshend Sydney on 7^th of February 1788. Lord Sydney was the British Home Secretary at that time and he issued a charter giving authorization to build a colony in the area. For the same reasons the colony was named as Sydney in his honor. The British faced some disturbances from the aborigines to the place in the initial years. However in 1820 Governor of New South Wales made significant advancements in the area. He focused on giving education to the original habitants of the place and he made the infrastructure of the area very modern.

Urbanization in Sydney

The nineteenth century is termed as the era of urbanization for Sydney. Immigrants from Ireland and Britain majorly settled in the area and they begun their new lives in the town. The municipal council of the city was formed in 1842 as it gained a good size till then. The town of Sydney was officially declared as a city in the same era. It was made the first city of Australia by the British which made it a gateway to human settlements in Australia. Since then people holding various nationalities have settled in the city and the city has accommodated them all.

In the 20^th century Sydney crossed a total population of one million people. The city prospered in terms of industrialization in the 20^th century. Melbourne also gained popularity in the same century but Sydney exceeded in terms of population and it is still having more population then Melbourne. Bondi Beach Bondi beach is one of the most famous tourist destinations of the world. All the modern day facilities of water sports are available at this beach. Apart from that the tourists can get lessons for various kinds of water sports in the area. It is a wonderful destination to spend time with a family or as an adult. The famous Bondi wall is also located in the area.
Blue Mountains The blue mountains of Sydney are not only worth seeing rather they remind of the aboriginal times of the city. They are historical and they are awesome place to be visited.
